Daktronics Scoreboard Price, LED Perimeter Screens & Truss: What I'd Do Differently (and What I'd Buy)

Full disclosure: I've been ordering scoreboards and LED displays for sports venues and event production for nine years. In my first year (2017), I approved a scoreboard with the wrong voltage configuration. It looked fine on my screen. The result was a blown power supply at 2 a.m. on opening night. That was the first of 23 significant mistakes I've documented, totaling roughly $86,000 in wasted budget. Since then, I've built a checklist that has caught 47 potential errors in the past 18 months.

So when you ask me about a Daktronics scoreboard price or a Daktronics LED display, I don't give you one number. I ask what problem you're solving. Because the right answer depends entirely on which of these three scenarios you're in.

  • Scenario A: You're installing a permanent scoreboard or display into a fixed venue. Sport, mounting, and service matter more than panel cost.
  • Scenario B: You're putting together an LED perimeter screen for events or touring. Truss weight, certification, and setup speed dominate the decision.
  • Scenario C: You need an indoor media wall for a lobby, concourse, or conference hall. Pixel pitch and viewing distance are the main drivers.

Scenario A: Permanent scoreboards and the real Daktronics scoreboard price

For a permanent installation, the hardware quote is the least useful number. In 2023, I helped a school district compare bids for a basketball scoreboard. The lowest quote was about $12,000 less than the Daktronics option. But once we added the controller, cabling, concrete foundation, installation, training, and a three-year service plan, the gap dropped to about $4,000. Then the generic vendor's scorer interface failed in November. It took three weeks to get a replacement. The school spent $6,000 on a rental unit in the meantime. That's not a one-off. In my documented orders, the lowest quote has cost us more in about 60% of cases.

That's why I tell buyers to stop asking for a Daktronics scoreboard price in isolation. Ask for the total installed cost, the response-time commitment, and a spare-parts plan. A smaller Daktronics scoreboard with the service package is often a better purchase than a larger generic display without support. If it's a swimming pool or track facility, the quote also has to include touchpads, start systems, and timing software. That's where integrated timing systems have saved me more than once.

If brand colors are part of the scoreboard, ask the manufacturer for a color calibration report. The Pantone color matching system reference uses a Delta E measurement, and a Delta E under 2 is the general target for brand-critical color. I didn't know that in 2017. Now I won't sign off without a number.

Scenario B: LED perimeter screens and LED screen truss, the expensive boring part

When someone asks about an LED perimeter screen, they usually compare pixel pitch and brightness. Those matter. But the mistakes that actually cost me money happened when I ignored the physical rigging.

In September 2022, I ordered a P4.8 LED perimeter screen with an LED screen truss system. The supplier said the truss was 'designed for it.' It looked fine on paper. Then we load-tested it, and one truss section bowed 40 millimeters. That was a $3,200 order, $1,100 in replacement rental, and a three-day delay. The structural engineer found undersized bracing for the wind load. That's why my checklist now includes safe working load ratings and stamped drawings for every truss section.

Most buyers focus on the LED screen and completely miss the truss rating, cable trays, and lifting points. The question everyone asks is 'what does the screen cost?' The question they should ask is 'what does the whole flown assembly weigh, and what is the truss certified to hold?' If the supplier can't answer that, don't sign the order.

I also went back and forth between buying truss and renting it for almost two years. Renting saved cash, but every event had different gear, different stacking, and different failure points. We eventually bought our own truss package, but only because we run more than 20 events a year. If you're doing fewer than five events a year, rent it. That's not a weak answer. It's a math answer.

Scenario C: P4.8 LED displays, why you don't need the densest panel

If you're choosing a Daktronics LED display for an indoor media wall, the most important number is viewing distance. A P4.8 (also called P4.81) LED screen has a pixel pitch of 4.8 millimeters. It's not a high-density panel. But if the nearest viewer is 15 feet or more away, it's hard to tell P4.8 from a much denser screen with normal video content. At 10 feet or less, you'll start seeing individual pixels.

This is where my opinion might surprise you. For many indoor spaces, P4.8 is a better buy than P2.9 or P2.5. The denser panel can look sharper up close, but the price per square foot jumps substantially, and if the audience is standing far away, you won't see the difference. I'd rather spend that extra money on a better processor, content design, and backup panels.

But this is not permission to buy the cheapest screen either. If the viewing distance is 12 feet and someone quotes you a P6 display just because it's on sale, it'll look terrible. The goal is the lowest sufficient pixel pitch, not the lowest price. That's the distinction many budget-focused buyers miss.

One more thing about vendor claims. If a supplier says a Daktronics LED display is 'eco-friendly' or 'recyclable,' ask for the substantiation. Per FTC Green Guides, environmental claims must be backed up. I learned this after a client asked me for that proof and I didn't have it. That conversation did not go well.

How to tell which scenario you're in

Here's the practical test I use. If the display will stay in the same building for five years, you're in Scenario A. If it gets packed up and moved more than ten times a year, you're in Scenario B. If it's a fixed indoor media wall with the nearest viewer more than ten feet away, you're in Scenario C. If you're looking at a mobile scoreboard that also gets shipped, then use Scenario B's rigging rules and Scenario A's service contract.

Then get quotes with that scenario in mind. A permanent scoreboard with integrated timing and custom graphics is not comparable to a portable LED screen, even if they share a brand name. The Daktronics scoreboard price will make sense only after you've defined the job, the viewing distance, and the support path.

As of January 2025, LED display pricing is still moving. So verify current quotes before you budget. Don't treat this article as a price list, treat it as a way to avoid the mistakes I've already made.

Here's the checklist I wish I had in 2017:
  • Define the scenario before requesting a price.
  • Compare total installed cost, not hardware price.
  • Get safe working load ratings for every truss section.
  • Ask for a color calibration reference if branding matters.
  • Ask for substantiation on 'eco-friendly' or 'recyclable' claims.

Copy it, adapt it, and use it. It will save you at least one 2 a.m. opening night call. I know because I didn't have it in time.
