I still keep my mistake spreadsheet. Every new project starts with three questions:

  1. What is the minimum lifespan this system has to meet? If the answer is 'ten years or more,' cheap hardware is the wrong starting point.
  2. Who is accountable when something fails? On public scoreboards, 'I'll have someone look at it' isn't a service plan.
  3. What else does this display have to talk to? A scoreboard that connects to shot clocks, timing consoles, content software, and video replay is a system, not a screen.
