A 20-amp requirement is not just a normal outlet. It often means a dedicated circuit with the right wire gauge and overcurrent protection.

I am not an electrician, so I now send the spec sheet to a licensed electrician before I order. A $150 consultation is cheap compared with the $9,400 change order I paid in 2021.

2. Brightness and Environment Are Package Deals

LED screen features matter, but only in context. A gymnasium display does not need to fight direct sunlight. An outdoor digital monument signage application absolutely does. If the screen faces the afternoon sun, a lower-nit indoor panel will look washed out no matter how sharp the resolution is.

3. Mounting Is Part of the Structure

The mounting bracket is never just a bracket. Outdoor displays have wind loads and vibration. Indoor displays have weight limits and access requirements. On a monument sign, you need engineer-stamped drawings in many jurisdictions. This is a safety issue, not paperwork.

I learned this from the sprinkler line mistake. Now, before I approve a mount, someone walks the site and checks the wall cavity, the roof deck, and the location of mechanical lines.

4. The Signal Path Is Half the Installation

A Daktronics scoreboard or video display needs control signal from the scorer's table, control room, or media rack. If the conduit is not there, someone has to cut concrete or drill a wall after the fact. On one project, the planned cable entry was on one side of the court, but the scorer's table was on the other. The temporary cable worked for one season. The final clean installation cost $2,800.

Ask where the control cable arrives and where it needs to go. If those two points are not connected, the price will grow.

Daktronics Scoreboard Price: What a Realistic Budget Looks Like

There is no single daktronics scoreboard price, because Daktronics sells custom configurations. That makes budgeting sort of painful. Based on five quotes I reviewed in late 2024, here is a rough planning range:

  • Basic LED scoreboard with scoring and game clock, one-sided: $8,000–$15,000 before installation.
  • Two-sided LED scoreboard with controller and full game package: $18,000–$30,000 before installation.
  • Full-color video display with custom cabinetry and audio integration: $60,000–$150,000+ before installation.

Do not hold me to these numbers. They align with public procurement records I reviewed from school district RFPs, but they are not an official price list. Budget an additional 20–30% for installation, electrical upgrades, and permits, especially if the building is older than 10 years.

LED Screen Features That Matter More Than Resolution

When buyers compare LED screen features, they often start with resolution. For a scoreboard or a sign viewed from a distance, pixel pitch, brightness, and refresh rate matter more. Pixel pitch determines the distance at which the image looks smooth. Brightness determines readability in daylight. Refresh rate determines whether the display flickers on broadcast cameras. Daktronics spec sheets list all three; use them as the comparison basis.

OLED Display vs LED Display: A Procurement View

The OLED display vs LED display debate comes up in every large-sign project. For large outdoor signs and stadium displays, direct-view LED is usually the right choice. OLED has better contrast because each pixel turns off completely for black. That makes it great for indoor control rooms, close-up video walls, and premium retail displays. But for permanent outdoor signage, LED handles higher brightness, has less burn-in risk with static content, and is easier to service in modular sections.

In the Daktronics product categories I have reviewed, the technology is direct-view LED. I do not see that as a weakness. I see it as the right tool for the environment.

Digital Monument Signage: A Special Caution

Digital monument signage deserves an extra warning. If you are converting a static monument sign into a digital display, you are not just swapping the face. You are adding power, data, and heat management to an enclosed structure. Local sign codes may limit brightness, animation, or hours of operation. I am not a sign code expert, so before ordering, I call the local building department and ask what documentation they require. A 10-minute call can prevent an awkward conversation after delivery.

Also think about access. If the sign has a vandalism issue or a dead LED module, how will a technician reach it? A monument sign with a 15-foot clearance looks nice until the lift rental eats the maintenance budget.

When You Can Ignore This Checklist

If you are buying a replacement control console, a power supply, or a small indoor shot clock with an existing outlet, this checklist is overkill. If the architect for a new building already designed the power and data infrastructure, half these issues are solved. The checklist is for the common case: an existing facility, a new display, and a budget that did not include surprises.

Prices and specs were accurate as of January 2025. They will change. Verify current details with Daktronics or your integrator before making a decision. But the order of operations does not change: check the infrastructure first, then buy the hardware.

Bottom Line
