If you're Googling 'Daktronics price list' right now, I get it. You're trying to budget a scoreboard, a video wall, or some kind of LED display, and you just want a number. I was there in 2019.

What I didn't understand then—and what cost me close to $18,000 over the next few years—is that an LED display quotation isn't a product price. It's a system price. And unless you know what's actually inside the quote, a 'price list' is basically a starting point, not an answer.

The Surface Problem: You're Treating an LED Display Like a Giant TV

The first time I searched for a Daktronics LED display, I had three days to replace a broken perimeter board before a regional tournament. Normally I would have re-measured the site, checked the pixel pitch, and gotten at least two itemized quotes. There was no time. The most frustrating part of this industry is that the same issue keeps reappearing despite clear communication. You'd think written specs would prevent misunderstandings. They don't. On a 12-square-meter transparent screen order, we approved a quote that didn't include structural reinforcement. The installer stopped on day two. That meant extra engineering, extra brackets, and a one-week delay. The change order was nearly $3,000.

Downtime at the Worst Moment

A colleague in event production—who will stay anonymous—hired a vendor for a fleet of backpack LED screens. The quote looked great. The screens worked for the first four hours. Then the batteries started dying. The vendor had not spec'd enough battery capacity for an eight-hour festival day. The team ended up renting a generator. In the middle of a crowd. With a bunch of extension cords.

Backpack LED screens are a great niche product, but they follow the same rule: the panel is only half the project. You also need battery capacity, charging cycles, controller inputs, and a plan for heat and humidity.

The Sponsor Logo Problem

Color accuracy is a reputation issue. If you're selling sponsorship space on a Daktronics LED display, the sponsor's logo color has to be right. Pantone's color matching standards put Delta E < 2 as the brand-critical tolerance. A Delta E of 2 to 4 is noticeable to trained observers, and above 4 is visible to most people. I understand the appeal—outdoor TVs are cheaper, and some are labeled weatherproof. But a commercial outdoor LED screen is designed for continuous duty, intense sunlight, and environmental exposure. The price difference isn't just a brand markup; it's engineering.

The Short Checklist I Now Use Before Any LED Quote

After the third mistake—which I'll spare you—I created a checklist. It's not long, but it catches most problems.

  1. Know the viewing distance. Pixel pitch in millimeters is roughly the minimum distance in meters.
  2. Ask for brightness. Outdoor direct sun usually needs a much higher nit rating than indoor.
  3. Ask for the full system quote. Panels, controllers, cabling, mounting, installation, freight, and training.
  4. Ask about color calibration. If the display is for sponsorship or branding, Delta E matters.
  5. Ask for a reference project. The same Daktronics LED display can be configured totally differently for a storefront vs. a football stadium.

The checklist sounds obvious. But when you're under time pressure, obvious gets skipped.

And honestly, that's how I eventually stopped wasting money: not by finding a cheaper price, but by understanding what I was actually buying.
