A 72-Hour Daktronics Digital Signage Rescue (and What It Taught Me About Rushing)

The phone rang at 7:40 a.m. on a Tuesday in late September 2024. It was the facilities director at a regional university, and her first sentence didn't really sound like a question: 'We have 72 hours. Are you available?'

In my role coordinating emergency AV projects for sports venues, I've handled more than 40 rush orders over eight years—same-day turnarounds, late-night installs, a scoreboard controller that arrived DOA the morning of a championship. This one felt different. The donor wall was already built. The donor names were engraved. The display that was supposed to animate it was sitting in a warehouse, unconfigured.

A Process Gap I Should Have Addressed Earlier

Here's the part I have to be honest about: we didn't have a formal verification process for rushed installs at that point. I know, I know—an emergency specialist without a checklist. But it's true. Every project had its own informal pre-flight checks. They lived in my head, which is exactly where they didn't belong.

The original order had two parts. The gym was getting a Daktronics scoreboard, and that part had arrived early.
